Dentures – Dental Treatment Abroad

Two types of dentures are available – complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are, as their name suggests, used to replace a few teeth only.

Temporary dentures

If you have missing teeth, Helvetic Dental Clinics will provide temporary dentures because our dentists never make a definitive denture immediately after extractions. Bones and gums tend to shrink slightly, especially during the healing period after the extractions. Therefore, a temporary denture will require adjustments and should be considered as a temporary solution.

Full dentures

These are permanent dentures that contain all the teeth.

Partial dentures

A removable partial denture generally consists of replacement teeth attached to a pink base made of resin, connected by a metal frame that holds the denture in place. Partial dentures are used when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw. Not only does a partial denture fill the spaces created by the missing teeth, but it also prevents other teeth from moving. A partial denture with precision attachments is removable and attaches to the adjacent teeth.

Implant supported dentures

In a few cases, when the bone has receded too much, it isn’t possible to have implants. In that case a normal denture is used to replace the teeth. If, however, implants are possible, then dental implants can be used to support a denture. Known as implant supported dentures, or snap in/on dentures, or locator dentures, or also dental implants overdentures, they are dentures that snap in, they are not porcelain or “real” teeth.  You must remove them and clean them at night. Snap in dentures are great for those patients who are used to wearing dentures. Someone who is already used to wearing dentures will be very happy with this solution because the denture is held by the implants so there is a feeling of stability that do not exist with normal non snapped dentures.

How many implants?

For snap in dentures, we can use 2 to 6 implants. The more implants, the more the patient will feel that the denture is stable and secure.

Are there alternatives to Dentures?

Yes, dental implants can be used to support bridges, eliminating the need for a denture. You therefore avoid the pink plastic covering inside the mouth because you get small teeth with a natural look made of porcelain fused to metal or full porcelain. A fixed bridge is a better option for this situation, but sometimes a snap in denture can work well. The cost is usually higher but the implants and crown and bridge work look much more natural. All patients are not eligible for implants, your dentist will advise you on the possibilities taking also into consideration your budget.

What is a denture made of?

Dentures are fabricated by the dental laboratory using a combination of acrylics.
